Starcraft II – These Are the Best Three Campaign Missions

The single player campaign for Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty takes a little over 20 hours on Normal difficulty, spanning close to 30 missions, some of them with alternatives that can only be experienced on a new playthrough. But to me there are three missions which really manage to show off what Blizzard can do when it deploys its full arsenal of design toys.

1) The final Protoss mission, called “In Utter Darkness” – Ever since the first Starcraft we knew that Blizzard needs space and mass to put on a good show. Zeratul looks into the future and we get to play an alternate scenario which is built around the Protoss facing down the Zel Naga in one final battle. The unit cap is quickly reached as Carriers, Dark Rays and Zealots feel the screen and the enemies the gamer gets to fight are both normal Zerg and overpowered hybrid creations. The battle feels epic and important and it's the best of the campaign missions, in part thanks to the variety of challenges it manages to pose in quick succession.

2) The final Terran mission, named “All In” – Jim Raynor, who has managed to turn his rag tag militia into the best hope for humanity's survival, has gone to Char in order to confront the Queen of Blades herself. There are some uninspired moves that make the missions take long than it should but the emotional pay off more than makes up for the problems.

3) The burning planet mission, titled “Supernova” - The twist in this mission is that a wave of fire slowly advances across the map determining the player to move around, making any permanent buildings a temporary investment. It's one of the more interesting changes made to the gameplay in the single player even though it would have been nice to have a bit more pressure applied with the wall of fire moving quicker.
